The autism assessment typically involves a single in-depth session to gather comprehensive information, including behavioural observations, interviews, and diagnostic testing. Some questionnaires and intake forms are completed beforehand, while the testing itself takes place during the session, which generally lasts between 1 to 3 hours.
The testing phase includes the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) and other diagnostic tools, such as behavioral observations and clinical interviews. Our trained psychometrists and licensed psychologists administer these assessments to ensure accuracy and thoroughness.
Typically, the comprehensive report is ready within two weeks after the final assessment session. This allows our team to carefully analyze the collected data and observations. The report includes a detailed breakdown of findings, and clear, personalized recommendations for next steps, support strategies, and referrals if needed.
At VMA Psych, we understand that each child is unique, which is why we customize every autism assessment based on the child’s developmental history, behaviour, and the concerns of parents or educators. We use a flexible, culturally sensitive, and evidence-based approach, including tools like the ADOS-2, and maintain ongoing communication with families to ensure meaningful, accurate results.
Patient confidentiality is a top priority at VMA Psych. All records, reports, and communications are securely stored and only shared with your explicit written consent. We follow strict ethical and legal standards in accordance with Ontario’s health privacy laws (PHIPA), ensuring your family's information is always protected.
We accept all private insurance that covers mental health services, including providers like Manulife, Sunlife, Canada Life, and more. To ensure coverage, it's helpful to contact your insurance provider and inquire about the psychological services they cover, the hourly maximum they will pay, and who is covered in your family. Please note that we do not do direct billing or work with OHIP.
